Piaggio to expand the LX125 range with new variants

Piaggio is looking to expand its presence in the vast Indian scooter market this year. The Italian auto major known for its mini commercial vehicles and the Vespa scooters will be launching new variants of the Vespa LX125 which is currently the only offering. The move comes after Piaggio slashed prices of the LX125 by Rs. 6,700. Mr. Ravi Chopra, Chairman and MD of Piaggio Vespa Pvt. Ltd told Financial Express that the company will expand their business this year. He said: ” This could be achieved through newer versions and expanded market presence during the year. The company is contemplating a disc brake version and also a more sporty variant of the Vespa during the year.” The Vespa LX125’s rival Honda Aviator already comes with a disc brake which is relatively a new equipment in India’s scooter segment. The sportier version of Vespa could mean a scooter with bigger engine, probably a 150cc which would cater to a niche segment while serving as a brand shaper. On expansion plans, Mr. Chopra stated that, ” We have already invested 30 million euros in the facility. Nominal investments would be further made for the R&D efforts to create the new variants.” He also added that Vespa’s sales target for 2013 will be 90,000 to 95,000 units. The current annual capacity of the facility stands at 1,50,000 units and it will be progressively ramped up to its full potential by October 2013.
