Have we solved the mystery of the Kia Picanto test mule?

by Paul Joseph May 14, 2012 Featured

Our daily visitor Ben who spotted the mini Mahindra Xylo a few weeks back (and many others in recent years) encountered another one this past weekend. He’s come to us with a picture of the Kia Picanto testing on the highways of Chennai. IndianAutosBlog.com readers know the Picanto’s history in Chennai. It started testing without camouflage late last year and when images of it appeared all over the internet, Hyundai-Kia quietly adorned it with camouflage . We then speculated on the possibilities with Picanto in India and as we all know there’s no Kia in India for the Picanto to be sold. Hyundai’s having enough troubles meeting demand for diesel cars and adjusting to this sudden shift away from petrol models. The Eon and Sonata are new launches and they need balancing wheels until they can ride on their own.  The last thing they want now is to launch a new brand even though the Picanto is a cousin to the i10 that is localized heavily and has already formed a swarm of fans. When Ben came to us with the Kia Picanto’s image, we were determined to solve this puzzle. We did not hire ACP Pradyuman for this as our reader Aditya Singh suggested! Through some of our sources we’re able to tell you that the Picanto is testing a petrol engine, of 1-1.2L displacement. The engine is suspected to be the 1-liter Kappa engine Hyundai introduced on the i10 for the European market during the facelift operation about two years ago. The camouflage could be a deliberate ploy to confuse onlookers or to stop further speculation that Kia is planning an India foray. We’re told that Hyundai had brought this car from Korea (LHD model) to test the powertrain in Indian conditions. They have no plans to launch the Picanto in India as they have their hands full. We are unable to verify this information but we’re trying to learn more on it. An interesting observation is the car’s side mirrors exclusive to the mule – they are borrowed from the Santro.

Reva NXR caught on test; Tax exemption for EVs introduced in Maharashtra

by Paul Joseph May 14, 2012 Featured

Financial Express , in a report published last week, explained the Maharashtra government’s move to exempt electric vehicles from paying motor vehicle tax. To encourage its residents to buy electric vehicle that will certainly make a difference to the air quality in metros and crowded towns as well as make cities less noisy, electric vehicles are exempted from paying taxes. Electric vehicles also reduce the dependency on foreign oil and are a more efficient way of commutation. Meanwhile Mahindra-REVA continue testing the NXR (or next generation Reva) around Bangalore. The test mule shown here was spotted by our good friend Gokulraj of ZapStore.com , while he was returning to Chennai a few days ago. The NXR was showcased at the Delhi Auto Expo however M&M refused to give any further details about the power train. The Reva NXR is expected to be offered in two different battery packs. The first one will be a conventional lead acid battery pack and the second one will be an advanced lithium ion battery pack (the same batteries that are used in your laptop). The lead acid battery will have an 80 km range and the lithium ion pack will be good for 160 km. Adding to that, the Reva will be offered in 3 different sizes of battery pack – small, medium and large. At the Expo, Mahindra clearly mentioned that the prices and features will be announced during the time of launch which is expected to be before Diwali. We expect the Reva NXR (lead acid one) to be priced around 6 lakhs and the lithium ion one to be around 9 lakhs. Distribution will also be a key for Mahindra-Maini as Reva does not have more than two dealerships in India. Mahindra can choose to sell the Reva NXR from its own dealerships, which it is doing now, or set up separate shops for the Reva. While the former feels cost effective, it definitely dilutes the Reva brand, in turn making it difficult to justify the high price tag. [Source - FinancialExpress.com ]

Rendered: Mahindra Verito facelift tries to up its game

by Paul Joseph May 14, 2012 Featured

It should come as no surprise that Mahindra has started working on a facelift for the Verito . The facelifted model has been caught on test around Chennai a few times in the last month. The reason for the facelift is simple – the Verito is growing old. Surprisingly, despite of the outdated looks, the car has not showed decline in sales figures since Nov 2011. Ever since Mahindra introduced the Verito, it has been able to an increasing number of buyers and were able position it among utility vehicles such as Xylo, Bolero and Scorpio. However the Mahindra Verito (which is essentially a Dacia Logan) has been around since 2007. The opportunity of a facelift helps Mahindra to further bring the styling of the Verito in line with Mahindra’s DNA. The only difference between the Mahindra Verito and Dacia Logan was a Mahindra logo on the grill and the steering wheel. Thus, this facelift will bring the Verito closer to the Mahindra family. Our rendering maestro, Shoeb, has put forward his thoughts of what the new Verito should look like. The biggest change one can see is the new grill which is in-line with the Mahindra DNA. A generous dollop of chrome to make the Verito look upmarket can be seen evidently. Mahindra should focus heavily on the luxury appeal of the Logan to make sure that it calls out to families more than commercial operators. The front bumper sports horizontal lines and its orientation is flipped. New crystal clear headlamps sport high-mounted indicators instead of side-mounted ones. Wipers are adjusted to match Indian conditions (old Logan and Verito had the wipers for LHD markets). Bigger OVRM units now have a plastic housing (earlier Verito/Logan used body panels and the mirror seemed like they were sticking out of them). Coming to the rear, one can see a new set of tail lamps and a new boot lid with a dedicated area for the number plate area (old Verito had its number plate on the rear bumper). One can also expect new wheel caps and if we are lucky a new alloy wheel design to be a part of the facelift. Mahindra should also work comprehensively on the interiors as the current ones feel very dated. The huge slabs of plastic should be replaced by something more aesthetic and appealing. A new center console is also expected because previous spyshots showed camouflage in that area. Don’t expect major changes to the mechanicals. The K9K engine may be further refined to get more kmpl but we doubt if any changes will be made to the power delivery. What are your expectations from the facelifted Verito?

Toyota‘s Pixis Epoch has a weird name but returns 27kpl

by Paul Joseph May 14, 2012 Featured

Kei cars are a big thing in Japan (No pun intended). There are so many models to choose from. Mazda, Suzuki and Nissan have many versions of them. Essentially a Kei car is a small and light vehicle designed to comply with Japanese regulations in such a way that they are exempted from the requirement to certify that adequate parking is available for the vehicle. They mostly have diminutive engine and CVT gearboxes to propel them. Toyota has revealed a new Kei car called Pixis Epoch for the Japanese market. The Pixis Epoch is designed and developed by Daihatsu and will be sold under the Toyota umbrella. The Toyota Pixis Epoch measures just 3,395 mm long, 1,475 mm wide and 1,500 mm tall. It is powered by a 660cc engine mated to a CVT transmission in both two wheeled and four wheeled drive configurations. All models are automatic start stop system. A tiny engine, very little weight, good aero package and a start stop system together shoot the fuel efficiency to a whooping 27kmpl. The Toyota Pixis Epoch starts at under USD 10,000 (around 5 lakhs). [Source: autoblog.com ]

Audi’s game changing A3 sedan heads to showrooms in 2014

by Paul Joseph May 14, 2012 Featured

Every now and then, a manufacturer defines a segment by introducing a revolutionary product. BMW did it with the X6 and X1 and Maruti Suzuki did it with Ertiga. Now, it’s time for Audi to step up its game. The company has promised to bring out a sedan based on the A3 hatchback. It all new sedan will sit below the A4 and featuring slightly bigger wheelbase and more interior space than the donor A3 hatchback. Audi will use the MQB platform with ample use of aluminum to reduce the body weight. Power may come from 2 engines – 1.8L turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol 2.0L liter turbo diesel 4-cylinder Both are mated to a 7 speed S-tronic transmission. There are also rumors of S3 and RS3 variants with better performance as is the case S and RS derivatives of other Audi models. The Ingolstadt giant plan to tank the S3 sedan with a host of technologies such as park assist, traffic sign detection, active lane assist, cruise control and adaptive lighting. The Audi A3 sedan will land in showrooms by 2014 with a price tag of $28,145 (around 15 lakhs). However don’t think that the A3 sedan will have the market to itself. Mercedes has already showcased the CSC (Concept style Coupe), a sedan that will sit under the C Class in the same price bracket. BMW is quite mum about the a rival in this segment. However, the Bavarian automaker can explore the 1 Series platform for help. Sure, it is a more performance oriented product but BMW can modify it to make it more mass market friendly to rake in the volumes. [Source: inautonews.com ]

Skoda Rapid expected to launch in the UK later this year

by Paul Joseph May 14, 2012 Featured

Based on a heavily modified Polo platform, the Skoda Rapid is expected to sail to the shores of Britain soon after its late-2012 world debut in Europe, Motoring.co.uk has reported. In prize and size, the Skoda Rapid liftback will be positioned in the wide open gap between the Fabia and Octavia (Laura). The difference between the Indian and European Rapid (that the UK is receiving) is the boot that is a hatch in the European model’s case, interior quality that is likely to be better and have smoother finish, and VisionD styling cues that is missing on the Fabia-inspired Indian model. As we’ve reported recently, the Chinese market is also getting its own version of the Rapid with the interior designed using local tastes and preferences. The Rapid nameplate is not new to the British as a coupe using that name was on sale in UK in the late eighties and ceased production in 1990. Motoring is expecting the price of the Rapid to start at £12,000 (10.33 lakh rupees). The report notes that Skoda sells 5% of its cars in the UK. [Source - Motoring.co.uk ]

Render – Chevrolet’s mini SUV is a Captiva for the masses

by Paul Joseph May 14, 2012 Featured

The Chevrolet mini SUV, dubbed Enjoy by our friends at CarAndDriver Brazil, has been rendered based on the patent filing leaks and photographs of the test mule that is learning its way around Brazil. C&D Brazil has presented some details of Chevrolet Enjoy (not to be confused with the Chinese MPV coming from GM India later in 2012) and includes specifications of the Duster and EcoSport for comparison purposes. They claim that the Enjoy will be 4.28m long, slightly smaller than the Duster but a bit longer than the EcoSport. It has 480 liters of trunk capacity, which is much higher than the other two models. The top-end model is expected to be mounted on 18-inch wheels and Chevrolet may not vote for the idea of pasting the spare tire on to the car’s rear. The car’s upright stance is well complemented by styling cues inspired by the Cruze and Captiva. Like on modern Chevys, the Enjoy mini SUV has a twin port grille, muscular wheel arches and adventurous looking lights. The Chevrolet Enjoy is a rebadged Opel Mokka/Buick Encore and like the Duster, it is a global SUV project sold under different brands. It shares components with the Beat, Cruze and Sonic Twins. GM India needs something as global, updated and upmarket as the Enjoy to beat the competition in the mini SUV race. We expect GM India to shift its focus to the mini SUV in late 2013.
