SVP unwraps the Chevrolet Beat diesel

by Paul Joseph June 19, 2011 Featured

Our good friend Siddharth Vinayak Patankar of the highly popular Car and Bike Show on the NDTV network unwrapped the Chevrolet Beat diesel on last evening’s episode. Siddharth gave readers the lowdown along with a brief comparison with the Ford Figo. Details revealed during yesterday’s CnB show – A 936cc 3cyl diesel engine producing 57bhp and 150Nm of torque is paired to a new 5-speed gearbox – Turbo lag is less as the turbo is small and comes to optimum operating speed quickly – Suspension is tuned for more comfort – The cabin is more silent than the Figo’s – Variants are the same and equipment hasn’t been discounted on any of them – ARAI approved fuel efficiency figure is 24kmpl – Steering system shifted from hydraulic to EPS The Beat’s diesel engine is a downgraded edition of the 4cyl 1.3-liter Fiat Multi-jet engine powering everything from the Fiat Palio to the Maruti SX4. On the show, President and MD of GM India Karl Slym on said the Beat and Spark have different sets of customers. The buyer the Beat diesel will target is the WagonR and i10 fan. As petrol prices continue their journey north, the Beat diesel we must say has come at the right time, though the company would have liked to have it much before. OnCars.in earlier this year reported that the new diesel engine will be marketed as XSDE (eXtra Smart Diesel Engine). Features of the engine include an iron block, aluminum DOHC cylinder head, maintenance-free timing chain, centrifugal blowby separator filter for reduced oil consumption, low-noise timing gears, a balancer shaft designed to minimize NVH and a precisely sized waste-gated turbocharger. GM India told IAB that the Beat diesel will be launched during the second half of July. Chevrolet Beat Diesel caught testing The review can be seen on NDTV.com

College students build diesel scooter returning 110kpl

by Paul Joseph June 16, 2011 Featured

If squeezing another mile from that last liter of petrol has been like no other relief, here comes happiness to you in TWO forms. First is that you may now not spend on the more expensive fuel i.e. petrol but diesel and then the cherry on top is that you get to run 110 KM in a liter of it. (Yes, confirmed!). A group of newbie engineers form a Bangalore based engineering college, all inspired by their motto of achieving more fuel economy have developed a prototype of their project which is a diesel powered motor-scooter which does 110 kmpl in actual life. The team consists of mechanical engineering students from M S Ramaiah Institute of Technology. The basic construction of their project is that they have fitted a diesel Bullet engine to a Kinetic Blaze scooter, amazingly being able to retain the automatic transmission and clutch from the Kinetic scooter itself. Guided by their mentor and teacher Dr. S V Prakash four mechanical engineering students namely Naveen V V, Tony Paul, Nadeem Anwar and Sanjay Bhushan attempted and achieved success in completing their project which they completed as the final year project for the college final year examinations. The engine swap was not a breeze as many technical changes to the engine parts had to be made including reducing the engine displacement from 350cc to 200cc. As a part of the weight saving measure the team was also able to bring down the weight of the flywheel to a mere 7 kg. The power output of the engine has also been bought down to 3.5 bhp from the original 6.5 bhp. The team in total spent Rs.77,000 and is pretty confident if the project is mass produced, the cost would come down to approximately 55,000-57,000 rupees. The need for such economical transportation is in a direct opposite relation with the ever increasing fuel prices. The prototype costs 40 paisa per km compared to 1.70 Rs when compared to the closest petrol counterpart. The efforts of the team have not gone in vain as the Kirloskar group has shown interest in the project and will be further providing assistance and aid to the team in bettering the technology, churning out a fine tuned and maybe more fuel efficient engines for future.
