Shoeb R Kalania gets it dead right as the new Indica Vista gets spied

by Paul Joseph July 4, 2011 Featured

As Tata Aria and Tata Safari Merlin become the ‘talk of the town’ vehicles from the Tata Camp, we forget the humble Indica Vista which is the bread earner for the company. Unfortunately, the Vista has not managed to capture the fancy of the Indian consumer as Tata Motors would have hoped. As a result, we learnt from our sources and reading AutoX magazine that Tata Motors has started work on an Indica Vista facelift model. SRK envisioned the Indica Vista facelift on the first week of June with a Tata Manza ish front end with double barrel headlamps and a chrome grill. Little did we know that Tata Motors was also thinking on the same lines. Our good friends at OnCars have spotted a test mule of the Indica Vista facelift and thus have proved that IAB was right about it. The test mule, as SRK imagined, has a Manza front end bolted to the body of Indica Vista. The rear profile of the car remains more or less the same. It also features the same alloy wheels as the Manza. We expect the facelifted Vista to arrive during Diwali. This mild makeover is an effort to fend of the competition that will come from the big three hatchbacks (Toyota Liva, New Swift and Honda Brio). All three competitors will lock horns in the festive season of Diwali. In such a scenario, will the mildly face lifted Indica Vista have a fighting chance? [Source - OnCars.in via AutoX.in ]

Tata Motors plans Indica Vista facelift

by Paul Joseph May 31, 2011 Featured

BSMotoring has carried an interesting story talking about new models from Tata Motors during this financial year. An important model reported is the Indica Vista facelift as the company’ not been among the volumes in a segment that’s loaned a new face to Ford, Volkswagen and Nissan operating with one hatchback. Tata has an incredibly large number of variants on the Indica platform and the Vista has variants for economy as well as performance-seeking customers. Be it Indica or Indigo, the formula for Tata Motors has been to offer something for everyone. The Vista (the Indica prefix has diminished over the years) introduced in August 2008 has seen two fast-selling anniversary edition models, one not-very-fast-selling 90hp variant and four engines in all (SAFIRE90, SAFIRE65, Quadrajet and TDi for BS3 cities). In 2012, Tata could give it a much-needed cosmetic overhaul as a number of cars like Etios Liva, Brio, Renault hatchback are going to join the ranks. click through to read more

Tata Motors brings Ace Zip, Magic Iris, Safari Merlin in 2011

by Paul Joseph May 2, 2011 Featured

Tata Motors will introduce three models in 2011 – Ace Zip (load-carrier on the Magic Iris platform), Magic Iris (introduced in Jaipur last year) and Tata Safari Merlin , pan India a person with direct knowledge of the plans told Indian Autos Blog last week. Timeline for these launches still remain unclear. It is likely that the second half of 2011 could witness their roll-outs. Tata Motors has not launched the 2011 edition of the Freelander2 and work is underway to retail it this year. It has quietly started selling the Jaguar XJ diesel variant and is working on cost-down variants of the Aria . Registering a noticeable dip in sales of the Indica and Indigo brands, the saving grace was the Nano which surpassed the 10k mark in April.

Tata Motors reworked aerodynamics on the Indica eV2

by Paul Joseph April 28, 2011 Featured

The Tata Indica eV2 test drive report on BSMotoring.com contains surprising details and insights into the vehicle. One would assume the eV2 is just an Indica delivering more mileage. Let me tell you that’s not completely right. BSMotoring has listed out technical changes on the Indica eV2 such as 1) The front-end of the car has been reworked. The nose is now aerodynamically favorable. The air flow around front end is notably smoother. 2) The brake calipers have been redesigned for smoother and more efficient air passage. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software was used to design the caliper and the actual car was put through wind tunnel tests to get it right. 3) The vehicle’s tires have changed as well. Tata’ switch to low-rolling resistance rubber delivers better fuel economy as rolling friction is less. The wheel and tire weigh less thereby reducing unsprung mass of the vehicle. 4) The bearings on the suspension have also been changed to work with the new tyre-wheel configuration. 5) As expected, the DICOR engine has been tuned to meet BS4 emission norms. ECU remapping and the injection systems have seen revisions. 6) To protect the starter motor, the engine cranks only if the clutch is engaged. Head over to BSMotoring.com  to read all the other details including a drive report.

Chevrolet Beat diesel to carry XSDE nametag

by Paul Joseph April 8, 2011 Featured

OnCars.in is reporting that the Chevrolet Beat diesel , expected here in June, will carry the XSDE nametag which stands for ‘Xtra Smart Diesel Engine.’ The word “Smart” has appeared twice before on the Beat’s marketing strategy. During the launch last year, three keywords GM described the Beat with were tough, sexy and smart. Two months ago, the Beat received a modified petrol engine capable of handling LPG fuel under the name “Smartech.” We already know that the 1.0-litre three cylinder motor is a derivative of the  4-cylinder Multi-jet engine featured on the Indica Vista, Swift and Linea. The engine will generate 57PS of power and 145Nm of torque and its Powertrain development facility in Bangalore has played an important hand in its development. The locally-manufactured diesel engine, strapped to the Beat, will return close to 24kmpl, sources have told IAB. Source – OnCars.in

Ford Fiesta Classic – A Fiesta with some rough edges

by Paul Joseph April 7, 2011 Featured

The Ford Fiesta Classic was launched a few hours ago here in Chennai and IAB, as usual, brought the details to you first. The Fiesta Classic is not part of the eight new products for India by 2015 but that does not make it an irrelevant or minor launch. There is plenty of action in the entry-level sedan segment. The Swift Dzire still demands long waiting periods, the Etios’ reception has been like as thought its been serving customers well for the last 15 years. The Indigo Manza has the attention of every sedan buyer’s with acres of space and well-finished interiors. Ford believes there are many first time buyers who want a sedan. The Ikon’s been laid to rest and a large gap existed in Ford India’ portfolio between Figo and Fiesta. It is also a good idea to convert Figo enquirers into Fiesta customers. Is the Fiesta Classic my favorite Fiesta for a cheaper price? Not quite. The Fiesta Classic, on a casual glance is similar to the regular Fiesta. Only when you get into the car and inspect closely, you understand how Ford has been able to price it well. What exactly is new on the Fiesta Classic? Figo's gear lever, AC vents and audio system now also on Fiesta Classic For starters, the Fiesta’s stereo is lifted from the Figo. Door trims have been changed and black fabric seats with contrasting stitching is offered. Is the fit tight, and finish smooth? There are quite a few rough edges on the Classic. A plastic cap over the sharp edge can solve this issue The rear arm rest could bruise elbows. Plastic quality and texture are ordinary The cup holder for rear seat passengers is out of a broad gauge railway coach. Glovebox lid doesn't shut tightly The glovebox shuts loosely and the seats aren’t pleasing on the eye. What are the variants available? Refer to the brochure to understand what the trims are What’s good about the Fiesta Classic? The pricing is very good. The Fiesta is a tried and tested product and by slashing the price, Ford hopes it can sell more numbers. The waiting period for the Dzire and Etios especially could prompt buyers to walk into Ford dealerships. About 85% of the Fiesta Classic is localized and the spare prices will not pop eyeballs. Apart from the price, Ford is offering almost every feature from the previous Fiesta on the top-end Classic. The area where they have cut down is quality of interiors. It’s a sensible decision given the competition isn’t offering hand-crafted interiors. The Etios’ interior is a place I’d not be in and the Dzire’s interiors is nothing to really write home about. The Accent’s interiors come from the pages of history and the Logan’ too is basic and bare-bones with mirrored controls. Equipment wise, this is by and large the same car and that’s the upshot. What happened to the 1.6 “S” variant? Tell me it’s coming along on the Classic avatar.. Sadly there was no mention of it during the briefing. It doesn’t feature on the brochure either. This means the “S” is no more. Ford could offer a sports variant at a later date on the new Fiesta that debuts on the 14th of this month. The company’s only considering volume-driving models for the existing Fiesta. Is there a LPG or CNG Ford Fiesta in the pipeline? Although Ford offers LPG kits on overseas products, its focus in India is only on petrol and diesel engines. Ford’s energy will be on making the 8-product plan a successful one. Focus will be on the mainstream variants but it will continue to review opportunities. So don’t expect a Figo or Fiesta LPG/CNG in the near future. Why are they calling the new car Fiesta and this one as Classic? The strategy is quite confusing. Usually we see suffixes, but in many cases the older product isn’t not down-segment ed . The Zen Estilo replaced the Zen and similarly the the Indica Vista was positioned above the Indica. Ford is very particular in using the Fiesta nameplate as it is part of the global “One” strategy. The “One” strategy isn’t simply common cars or platforms, it also carries a personality quotient. From the global perspective, Ford wants the same branding across countries for its new generation cars. It provides the feeling of oneness. The only reason why Ford will use another name is when it is registered by another company. For example Maruti Suzuki holds rights to the name “Everest” in India and hence Ford went with Endeavour.
