GM China already working on Sail facelift [update]

by Paul Joseph July 6, 2011 Featured

Update – GM China has launched the Sail facelift with a new grille, bumpers, updated interior and parking sensors. India is expecting the Chevrolet Sail twins in 2012 in place of the Sonic twins and there’s a major development on this regard. GM China is working on giving the Sail a facelift with new bumpers, grille, updated interiors and rear parking sensors. The Sail is the first car to be developed in China in cooperation with an overseas partner. In the refreshed form, the Sail could land in India by July 2012. The Chevrolet Sail facelift will be listed in China later this month, according to CarNewsChina. The Sail twins are manufactured in China by the Shanghai-GM joint venture. It uses a 1.2-litre S-TEC II and a 1.4-litre S-TEC III meeting Euro IV standards. Producing 87hp and 103hp respectively, they are married to a 5-speed manual transmission. The 1.2-litre engine accelerates the Sail from 0-100km/h in 12.9 seconds while the 1.4-litre engine does it in 11.9 seconds. They are not pocket rockets but for city traffic, this is respectable. Chinese average fuel consumption is 5.7 litres/100km for the 1.2-liter engine and under 5.9 litres/100km for the 1.4-litre engine. GM should position the Sail to take on the likes of the Swift Dzire, Indigo Manza and Fiesta Classic. The 1.3-liter Multi-jet engine produced at GM’s newly installed Talegaon powertrain facility will come in handy as fuel prices fluctuate and make diesel fuel look like a runaway winner. Volvo XC30 – Sweden’s reply to the X1, Q3, GLC

by Paul Joseph July 5, 2011 Featured

Like buying clothes small, medium, large SUVs are now available from brands who once used to think twice before making anything small. The appetite for crossovers, especially compact crossovers is catching up all over the world. People love the idea of driving a big car with the attributes such as fuel economy and maintenance similar to a small sedan or hatchback. The crossover provides the driver with an elevated seating position which inspires confidence. Female drivers are big fans of such cars. The Volvo XC30 is one such vehicle in the new breed of compact crossovers. Measuring under 4.4 meters long (think Tata Indigo Manza) it will touch down in 2013. It will lock horns with the Mercedes GLC, Range Rover Evoque and Audi’s Q3. Automobile Magazine France notes that both 2- and 4-wheel drive will be offered on the junior who is expected to be the safest of his crop. The XC30 will share its platform with the V30, a compact five-door model halfway between wagon and sedan for 2013. A new generation of four-cylinder, single and dual turbo engines are in development producing between 150 to 310 hp. For China, an lengthened wheelbase version is also in the works. Volvo India tells IAB that they have no hesitation in selling such a model in India once it is available internationally. [Source - Automobile-magazine.fr ]

Exclusive – Mahindra mini Xylo spied inside out

by Paul Joseph June 22, 2011 Featured

IAB reader Jishnu mailed us snaps of the mini Xylo this morning that reveals fresh details of the car. The pictures provide a comprehensive look at the product. From the images and Jishnu’s email, we understand 1) It will be equipped with stop-start button 2) It will be a 5+2 seater. Jump seats fitted to the rear are strictly for children in the family. 3) A 3 pot engine producing 70hp and 160Nm of torque will be strapped to the vehicle 4) There will be no roof-mounted AC like on the normal Xylo 5) The compact Xylo stands on 205/65/R15 tires 6) Seat backs will have aircraft style trays 7) Spare tire will be mounted on the rear door The tiny quarter glass behind the jump seat will make it look like a grown up Wagon R In a rendering published in June 2010, Shoeb R Kalania had got the rear dead right Jishnu points out that the mini Xylo has “enormous” amount of space and is probably more than any C segment sedan. If the compact Xylo could be priced between 5-7 lakh rupees it will make it the ultimate Swift Dzire/Indigo Manza alternative. Mahindra’s strategy of providing more for less could work once again if the mini Xylo does not have an odd ball look. What do you think about the mini Xylo? Mahindra mini Xylo spy shots

Tata Motors sells 4 Lakh sedans

by Paul Joseph June 7, 2011 Featured

Time for celebration for Tata Motors ! Tata Motors India has just touched the mark of selling four lakh sedan car in the country. The first sedan car,Tata Indigo launched by Tata Motors in India was in early 2000’s. And since then there is no looking back for Tata in terms of cars in India. From the year of 2000, numerous kinds of sedan cars came in the market, but Tata made sure that its sedan made impressive sales, which could give them a reason to celebrate. However, as far as the Tata’s Indigo sedan car is concerned, it surely deserved all the success it got. There were many models of Indigo which were introduced by Tata, which included Tata Indigo with intercooler and turbocharger, Indigo CS with the TDI engine, Indigo DICOR with CRDI engine, Indigo XL with the DICOR engine and Indigo CS with the DICOR engine. Here, Indigo XL with the DICOR engine had a very responsible petrol engine, which churned out the power of 100 bhp. In the year of 2009, Tata Motors expanded its Indigo range by adding on Tata Manza that comes in both diesel engine and petrol engine. Tata Indigo Manza supported Tata in accelerating the car sales by 5 lakh units since the launch.

Rendered – 7 seat MPV on Manza platform

by Paul Joseph March 15, 2011 Featured

Talking from the Geneva Motor Show, Autocar India editor Hormazd Sorabjee told us a 7 seater on the Indigo Manza platform is in the pipeline for India. The Tata pipeline is certainly dry with only variants waiting to come in the next couple of years. The first real new car would be the Pixel which is at least three years away. The new Indica platform is a fertile field. Besides the regular Indigo, it will also give rise a compact sedan in the near term with Fiat’s 1.3-liter Multi-jet engine. The CS variant will carry a lot of difference. The rear especially can be styled to appeal to people who found it a bit boxy and old school. Coming back to the seven seater, there is no word on the powertrains. Given this won’t be as bulky as an Innova, they don’t need a big engine under the hood. Tata could downsize the Aria’s engine if the 1.3-liter is too small for a car of this size. On the styling front, we expect many components to be carried over from the Manza. Considering what Tata has put out on the market, exterior styling will be done up on their own without mimicking the competition. Interiors won’t be radically different and for cost advantage, seats, instrument cluster and console, upholstery and panels will be gathered from the existing parts bin. Tata Motors is a pioneer in making spacious and comfortable cars and hence we see plenty of space, comfort, boot space in this one. Its price will match some C-Segment sedans. Fuel economy, needless to point out, will be on the higher side.

Tata planning assembly lines in SA, Brazil and Indonesia?

by Paul Joseph March 9, 2011 Featured

In a bid to increase presence beyond Indian borders, Tata Motors might be planning assembly lines at strategic locations across the world. Indonesia , South Africa and Brazil could be the chosen three, Hindustan Times is reporting. PM Telang, managing director, India operations, Tata Motors – We are looking at various options to improve our passenger car exports. At this stage we cannot reveal our exact plan. Tata Motors has appointed distributors in countries where it has no presence. It recently roped in a former BMW employee, who headed Qatar operations, to work on the export plans. Tata Motors is under the impression that the Indica Vista and Indigo Manza will appeal to foreigners. The company is working on everything from two-cylinder gasoline engines to electric cars. Tata must ensure that its vehicles don’t have glitches as overseas markets might react differently to faults. Tata should aim to get it right from day one. Source – Hindustan Times
