Maruti Suzuki Alto outsells every other car in the WORLD, again!

by Paul Joseph January 26, 2012 Featured

For a car that sells every 2 minutes , the Maruti Suzuki Alto is no amateur when it comes to breaking sales records. It has been the bestselling car in India since the Maruti 800 forfeited that title after its parents declared it was too old for it to continue competing everywhere. Our liking for the Alto even made it the best selling hatchback of the world in 2010 . And it has done it again! The Maruti Suzuki Alto outpaced the likes of VW Gol and Fiat Uno to become the bestselling car of the world for the second time in a row. The Alto sold over 300,000 units followed by VW Gol in Brazil at 293,454 units, Fiat Uno (Brazil) at 273,537 units and VW Golf in Germany at 258,059 units. Another gem from Suzuki’s stable – Wagon R completed the top 5 best selling cars of the world. However, there is a twist in this story. Although Alto bagged the best selling title, its growth rate is losing steam as time progresses. The fastest growth rate was demonstrated by Fiat Uno in Brazil. There could be various factors that have taken a toll of the growth rate such as market slowdown, rising petrol prices, launch of the Hyundai EON, etc. With the entry of new players in the small car segment such as Nissan and Fiat, the situation is not going to improve for Maruti. Do you think the Alto can sustain the growth for the third time in the row this year? [Source: HindustanTimes.com ]

Nissan India gets serious about developing Alto/Eon rival

by Paul Joseph January 10, 2012 Featured

If you wanted to buy an Alto and thought that EON is your only alternative, you won’t hold on to that thought for much longer. Nissan India has announced plans of entering this space very soon with their own contender developed from scratch. Nissan Compact Sport Concept at Auto Expo 2012 – Has no relation to the story Commenting on the development, Mr Andy Palmer, Executive Vice-President – We will look at an affordable car without a doubt. There are several sub-segments (under the Rs 3-lakh space) and we have ambitions to traverse as many of those as practically possible. However, Nissan India is steering clear of the ‘cheapest car’ label. The company intends launch small car in a space which is dominated by Alto and has recently invited the Eon. The planned product will be critical to ramping up volumes in India and strengthening its brand in the personal buying space. The new product is targeted towards people who want to upgrade from the Tata Nano and motorcycles. A Nissan official had earlier told IndianAutosBlog.com that one of the ways to build a car smaller than Micra was by using the V-Platform . Nissan India may choose to pursue this ambition solely by itself or with the help of its existing allies. Considering Ashok Leyland is not interested in the personal car space, Nissan may partner with Renault in order to develop this product. [Source: TheHinduBusinessline.com ]

It has begun – Hyundai Eon nears sales target as Alto shivers

by Paul Joseph November 20, 2011 Featured

Hyundai has launched a fully fledged onslaught on Maruti Suzuki by introducing the Eon. This segment was thoroughly dominated by the Alto for over a decade. Even the much hyped Tata Nano couldn’t shake the Alto from this segment. But what the Nano couldn’t do, the Eon has started to achieve. See high quality images of the Hyundai Eon Hyundai had set a modest target of 7,000 units per month for the Eon. Despite of the fact that the Eon was launched with a petrol engine in a market where buying sentiments are dwindling, the little wonder has managed to mop up 6,315 orders. In the same month, Maruti Suzuki has posted the lowest ever sales of the Alto – just 15,197 units. Sure, a considerable amount of the Maruti Suzuki management’s attention was focused on solving the labor crisis and the production stoppage due to it. But Hyundai isn’t getting complacent anytime soon when it comes to EON. 6,315 units is not 7,000 and hence the company is trying hard to push the sales figure. In order to achieve the annual sales targets, Hyundai is increasing its footprint in non-metro areas to cash in on potential demand when the market recovers. The company is also planning to beef up the network of 336 dealer outlets and 150 sales branches to push sales. Next month will be the true test of the EON as Maruti’s labor woes have come to an end and the production has started in full swing. Will the EON further encroach on Maruti’s territory?
