Tata Motors’s mysterious 1-liter 3cyl DICOR engine at Auto Expo

by Paul Joseph January 12, 2012 Featured

Curtains have fallen on the Delhi Auto Expo but we sure aren’t done talking about all the interesting displays. Case in point is the three-cylinder DICOR engine shown at the Tata Motors pavilion. The company has not shared data on its underpinnings which is why we believe its a 1.4-liter (from the Indica eV2) with one deleted cylinder. The new engine belts out 65PS of power and 140Nm of torque. The Manza hybrid concept vehicle standing next to it hides one under its bonnet. Tata Nano will have its own two-cylinder sub-1 liter diesel engine and the Vista is unlikely to nix its well-refined 1.3-liter Fiat unit for this three-cylinder. That brings us to the question – For application in which production vehicle was this engine designed for? Surely it can’t hold on until the Manza hybrid is ready to head out to dealerships. Is it for a future product that replaces the Indica eV2 or sits right between the Nano and the eV2? Or is Tata about to pull off a 30kmpl on the eV2 with the help of this downsized motor? What do you think? Image credit – HK-Harry

Tata Nano CNG launch in 2012

by Paul Joseph January 9, 2012 Featured

Tata Nano CNG version will be commercially available by end of this year. This announcement was made by Tata Motors during ongoing New Delhi Auto Expo. The Nano CNG version will be powered by   TATA 273 GASOLINE BI-FUEL CNG MPFI 624cc engine. Tata Nano CNG is expected to continue with current drive train. We don’t anticipate any other changes in  mechanicals. The CNG powered Tata Nano will get a 15 liters petrol tank and a CNG tank with 35 liters holding capacity. Current Tata Nano 2012 returns a fuel economy of  25.4KMPL on petrol  and company claims CNG variant will return best in class mileage. The CO2 emission is as low as 92.7 gm/km. According to Tata Motors, Tata Nano CNG will have easier mechanism to switch  between CNG and gasoline fuels. A Software controlled leakage detection system is capable of tracing  even very minor fuel leakages and to shut the fuel line. Another important point to be noted is, company claims the  CNG kit components (Cylinder to be precise) do not compromise luggage space. Tata Nano CNG is expected to hit market very soon. Here is official confirmation. “Nano CNG is clearly on the cards. We plan to launch it very soon. Hopefully, we should be rolling it out this year,” said Mr. P M Telang, Tata Motors’ Managing Director. “We might look for an appropriate car for the European market. The current Nano, as it is introduced in India, would probably have different emission and safety specifications from that of the European market. So it has to be a substantially different car,” he said while ruling out Tata Nano’s Europe debut. We think a production version of Tata Pixel will be Tata Motors offering for Europe. But he confirmed, Tata Nano 2012 will be launched in Asian countries like, Thailand, Bangladesh and Myanmar. “Entering into markets like Bangladesh, Myanmar and other South-East Asian countries like Thailand and Indonesia are on the cards. This is the blueprint for a year,” he added. Ever since it’s launch Tata Nano 2012 has  improved Nano sales figures. We hope with the launch of Tata Nano CNG, the sub-compact will further lift the sales figures (especially in metro cities). Stay tuned for more news updates. Tata rolls out upgraded Tata Nano without price hike

by Paul Joseph November 21, 2011 Featured

Nano, the subcompact car from  Tata Motors received a much needed update today. 2012 Tata Nano has been launched in India with a more powerful but efficient engine and  many other additional features. As we said earlier, now Tata Nano is powered by a 38PS engine, which is 3 PS extra compared to current engine while the maximum torque has been increased from 48Nm to 51Nm. The engine capacity remains the same – 624cc. The fuel economy has been bettered further, while the current model  of Nano returns 23.6kms per every one liter of petrol it sips, the New Tata Nano returns an impressive 25.4kmpl (certified by  Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI)). Tata Motors has not revised the price tag now, so Nano’s standard variant will continue to be priced at Rs.1.40 lakhs. The top end variant Tata  Nano LX will be priced at Rs.196 lakhs. “Tata Nano owners, over 90 per cent of whom are highly satisfied with their choice, have given us valuable insights on what more can be done. We have introduced some of these ideas,” said P M Telang, Tata Motors Managing Director (India Operations). During this face lifting exercise, Nano has been become environment friendly as well. “The high fuel efficiency, with a low kerb weight of 600 kg, ensures that the Tata Nano at 92.7 gram per kilometre has the lowest CO2 (carbon dioxide) emission among cars in India”  Tata Motors said  in a press release. The current Tata Nano emits 101 gram of CO2 per every  km clocked. In addition to all changes mentioned above, New Tata Nano comes with a more premium interiors and new paint options. 2012 Nano has already reached various dealerships so it could be worth checking it out. In the month of October, Tata Motors manages to ship out 3700+ Nanos to various parts of the country. We think this upgrade will further lift the sales in coming months. by Paul Joseph November 16, 2011 Featured

Tata Nano, the much discussed subcompact is all set to get a revamp in features list. Tata’s  ambitious project Nano has not been a success story  as we  expected. Tata Motors has now upgraded  Nano with  new features to make it more appealing for small car buyers. The upgraded Tata Nanos have already reached showrooms and the best part is Tata Motors has not revised the prices so far. So what are all extras in 2012 Tata Nano..? hit the jump for more details. The new Tata Nano’s entry level model Tata Nano CX gets  a black and silver panel dashboard, black door trims with new fabric design, new improved seats with better cushioning and Out Side Rear View mirrors on both the sides. The top end variant, LX now comes with  beige and silver panel dashboard, beige and black door trims, improved seats with better cushioning, additional Out Side Rear View Mirror on the left side and  new wheel caps. In addition to those changes, the NVH characteristics have been improved. Though company has not made it official, 2012 Tata Nano is expected to have  better mileage figures compared to current variant.  Tata Motors are expected to utilize  their learning in the development of  e-CS technologies to surpass 25 KMPl mark in new Nano. The new Tata Nano will be available more  paint options, ie  in both  non metallic paint shades and  metallic shades. Four new shades (Orange, Pearl White, Lime Green and Silver) have been added to new Nano’s colour options. Overall the attempt looks very good considering the fact that prices have not been revised. Tata Nano sales have been inconsistent in the recent past. Though it is showing an upward trend and reached 4000 mark, it is far below Tata’s target ie 10,000 units. Sources say us  Nano’s mother plant in Sanand is almost idle due to huge inventories in company and dealerships. Do you think the improved Tata Nano can revive the sales ..? Let us wait and watch. Tata Motors Doing Better than its Rivals

by Paul Joseph November 15, 2011 Featured

The sales results of Tata Motors were declared yesterday and the company can heave a sigh of relief. The car sales across the country showed signs of gloom in the month of October and was the worst ever in the last ten years and even Tata Motors could not do anything to avoid it. However, the sales figures of luxury cars and commercial vehicles have not been much affected. Tata buses and trucks hold about 60 percent of the market share. The sales of these vehicles increased by 130,126 units, or 17.7 percent, in the past one year. Although the sales of commercial vehicles are not very often in the news, their contribution to the annual growth of the company is quite significant. Last month the sales of the car dipped significantly, but the sales of commercial vehicles dipped by two to three percent. (more…)
